The tag list is a child window that displays a list of predefined "tags." A tag is simply a short text string of characters, and the name "tag" is used as this feature is commonly used for HTML tags. You can toggle the tag list in the Layout tab.

The purpose of the tag list is to provide you with a method to easily insert commonly used tags / strings into the file without having to type them. To insert a tag, select the tag you wish to insert and double-click on the tag, or press Enter.

When the tag is inserted into the active document, the start tag (if defined) is inserted at the beginning of any text selected and the end tag (if defined) is inserted at the end of the current selection. If no selection is made the tags are inserted at the caret location.

If you used Enter to insert the tag, focus will remain in the tag list. If you double-clicked the tag or pressed Ctrl + Enter to insert the tag, focus will be moved to the active file.

Tags consist of a start and end tag. You can create multiple groups of tags, and you can select groups from the drop down list at the top of the tag list window.

The Modify tags command in the context menu allows you to modify the list of tags or add a new tag list file.

Adding new tags

The default file for the tags named "taglistu.uet" and is stored in the directory where the INI file is located, which by default is %APPDATA%\IDMComp\UltraEdit or %APPDATA%\IDMComp\UEStudio. Additional tag lists, created by others users, are available for download from our website. Once the tag list file is saved to your system, open it in the editor.

You'll need to copy the full tag list and then paste it into the tag list file. You can find the tag list file in the "Filename" field of the Modify tags dialog, near the bottom.

The exact title of the tag list must be added to the [Group List] section of the tag list file. For example, the ASP tag list title is [Tag Group - ASP - Active Server Pages]. The original [Group List] should be modified from:

[Group List]
0=COLD FUSION - Tags
1=HTML - Special Characters
2=HTML - Tags
3=UE/UES Macro Commands
4=UE/UES Script Commands
5=

to:

[Group List]
0=COLD FUSION - Tags
1=HTML - Special Characters
2=HTML - Tags
3=UE/UES Macro Commands
4=UE/UES Script Commands
5=ASP - Active Server Pages
6=

in order to add ASP tags. The empty lines at the end of the [Group List] and the tag list itself are important and must remain in the file.
