Use Open from FTP to open a file from an FTP server directly in UltraEdit for editing. The FTP Open dialog is a modal dialog (i.e., you cannot interact with the main editor window until this dialog is closed).
Press the Accounts button to open the FTP Accounts dialog, where you can create new accounts and modify existing ones.
To connect to a server, select the desired account in the account drop down at the top, then click the Connect button to connect. This button changes to Disconnect when connected, and clicking this will immediately terminate the FTP connection.
Once connected, you will see an explorer-style file and folder listing in the main area of the FTP Open dialog. You can navigate into subdirectories by simply double-clicking on them, just like you would in explorer or any other file browser. You can sort the file listing by name, date, size, etc. by clicking the appropriate column header.
Click the Home button to return to the default starting directory for the account.
Click the Up arrow button to go navigate to the parent folder of the active directory.
Click the Refresh button to refresh (re-download and re-list) the current directory information from the host server.
The Current directory combo box field displays the current directory. You can quickly navigate to a different directory on the server by typing it into this field and pressing Enter or clicking the Right arrow (go) button. Any directories you manually type here are stored in the combo box's history drop down. Selecting a path from the history drop down will navigate to that path on the server. Click the "<clear>" item at the bottom of the history drop down to clear out all items from this history.
You can filter the directory list to show a subset of files by manually typing a filter in the Filter text field, just to the right of the Right arrow button. The filter supports Perl regular expressions as well as standard wildcards. This filter only affects the listing downloaded from the server and displayed in the integrated FTP client. Any filters you type here are stored in the combo box's history drop down. Selecting a filter from the history drop down will immediately apply that filter. Click the "<clear>" item at the bottom of the history drop down to clear out all items from this history.
You can create new directories and files on the server by right-clicking in the list and selecting Make Directory or Make file from the context menu. Once created, you can type in the new name for the file/directory.
If you right-click on a file or folder within the file list, you will see additional options to Delete, Rename, or set Permissions on the remote file/folder. Setting permissions will only work on servers that recognize the FTP site command "chmod", which is typically only Unix based servers.
Checking the Hide Directories option at the bottom of the file list will hide directories in the .
Double-clicking a file in the file list will immediately open it in UltraEdit. You can also select the file in the file list first, then click the Open button to open it. If you know the full path of the file you wish to open, you can type it directly into the Open text field and press Enter or click Open to open it. As the file is downloaded, transfer progress is shown at the bottom of the FTP Open dialog.
The current connection status as well as any errors or information from the server or FTP operations are shown directly beneath the transfer progress bar.
Any FTP transfer is executed using the specified transfer type (ASCII or Binary). This will use the account's default setting, but the radio options here allow you to change it on a per-transfer basis. Binary transfers are the recommended transfer type. For more information on this, see the FTP accounts topic.
After a file is opened from the FTP server, the FTP Open dialog will close if the option Close dialog after transfer is set (by default, it is). Uncheck this to leave the dialog open.
