You can easily add or remove [[wordfiles]] for [[syntax highlighting]] in UltraEdit using the '''Add and remove languages''' dialog. To access this, click the '''Add another language...''' button in the "Coding" tab just under the "View as" drop down, or click the '''Add / remove languages''' button in [[Settings:Editor display:Syntax highlighting|Settings » Editor Display » Syntax Highlighting]].

The dialog lists in alphabetical order all language wordfiles currently available from the [https://www.ultraedit.com] server for syntax highlighting. (You can, of course, [[wordfiles|create your own wordfile]] if the one you are looking for is not listed here.) The file extensions set in the wordfile are listed to the right of the language name.

All installed wordfiles are sorted at the top of the list and displayed with a check mark in the checkbox to the left of the language name. Double-clicking on any installed language will open the related wordfile for editing.

You can filter the list of syntax highlighting languages by typing a search string in the '''Filter''' field above the list of languages. To add all wordfiles matched by the filter, click on the checkbox to the right of the filter field. The '''Clear''' button will clear out the filter.

To add a syntax highlighting language, simply check its checkbox in the main list of languages. It will appear with a checkmark in '''bold''' font to show that it has been selected but not yet installed. As soon as you click '''Apply''' or '''OK''', all wordfiles will be downloaded and installed immediately for the languages you've added.

To remove a syntax highlighting language, uncheck its checkbox in the main list of languages. It will appear with a strikethrough to indicate that it is staged for removal. As soon as you click '''Apply''' or '''OK''', the wordfile(s) associated with the language(s) marked for removal are removed from your configuration and the language(s) are removed from the "View as language" list.

Wordfiles are saved to and removed from the folder shown in [[Settings:Editor display:Syntax highlighting|Settings » Editor Display » Syntax Highlighting]]. By default, on Windows systems this will be '''%APPDATA%\IDMComp\UltraEdit\wordfiles''', however you can change this to a different directory if desired. The "wordfiles" directory in the UltraEdit installation directory is a source repository for wordfile defaults and should '''not''' be used as the working copy of wordfiles.

To reset all syntax highlighting languages back to factory defaults, click the '''Defaults''' button. All languages not included by default when UltraEdit is installed will be removed from the system. Along with this, all default wordfiles will be reloaded and any modifications made to default wordfiles will be overwritten.
